DIY Nice and Monaco

Villefranche sur Mer Cruise Guide

Villefranche-sur-Mer is perfectly located for cruise passengers who want to visit beyond the village. Thanks to excellent public transport, it’s easy to reach Nice or Monaco independently — no pricey shore excursion required. This guide shows you exactly how to do both by train or bus, so you can choose the option that best fits your schedule.

Villefranche’s train station (gare in French) is a 600m (or 9 minute) walk along the waterfront pictured above from the tender terminal. The walk is flat – save for a staircase to access the station itself. From there, local TER trains run towards Nice (the platform closest to the beach) and Monaco (the platform furthest from the beach). During working hours, trains run approximately every 20-30 minutes. Tickets can be brought at a booth on the platform.

The main bus stop (Villefranche l’Octroi) is about a ten minute walk from the tender dock (up stairs and hills) and tickets can be purchased via tap-and-go onboard

Which option is best for cruise passengers?
Trains are generally the fastest, although can be particularly crowded during commuter rush hour around 8am and 5pm, while buses offer a more relaxed, scenic experience.
